We definitely need the option of turning off answer streaks.

The answer streak system often turned to be

    • unfair (e.g. a student won despite having less right answer than the student on the 2nd place - this is unacceptable) and
    • demotivating (e.g. a student who fails the penultimate question, having the same point as another student who has maximal answer streak, defeats again this another student even if she is much faster at the last one).

I know that the idea behind the answer streak system is to prevent super-fast guessing but it is not the problem I ever faced.

Bring the toggle off option back or phase out the answer streak system completely.

I forgot Kahoot even existed until I got a notification about a comment on this thread. Thanks Quizizz.

I guess I hadn't played Kahoots with my class in a few months. I just saw that the toggle for Answer Streak Bonus is gone. I have a lot of choice words to say about this, but they do not represent academic language. Who "improves" a service by taking away functionality???!!! This makes ZERO sense. As so many others have said, most of my students just gave up after two or three questions because they then had no chance of winning. I spent hours and hours setting up my Kahoots because in higher levels of math, I had to use images for the questions and choices, which I had to create over in other programs, not just typed text. I am livid that my time was now in vain because I will not use Kahoots with Answer Streak Bonus. It completely defeats the purpose of the game--to get kids excited and engaged.

PLEASE BRING BACK THE OPTION TO PLAY THE GAME WITHOUT ANSWER STREAK BONUS!!

I don't understand the bonus streak.  Why is getting answers correctly in a row better than getting the same number correct sporadically.  It doesn't allow for equal comparison if the game is played with random order questions as someone may get easier questions strung together and another not.

At least the option of using or not should be available.

Thank you for your feedback about the answer streak bonus. I'm a product manager at Kahoot and I'm exploring some options to address the concerns raised in this thread. In particular to try keep kids at the bottom half of the leaderboard motivated throughout the game.

The thinking behind the answer streak bonus was to discourage guessing in a time based game. So students would take their time to think about which answer to choose so as to build or keep their answer streak. The ability to turn off the answer streak was removed last year as a very small percentage of users choose to turn it off (<1% of games).

I understand from the thread that the answer streak bonus can have the opposite affect and can demotivate the kids at the bottom of the leader board if the stronger kids are getting extra answer streak points and the gap between top and bottom widens. This can lead them to either drop out of the game or guess quickly to try catch up.

One idea I would live to get your feedback on is to change the allocation of the answer streak points to give more points to people lower down the leaderboard for achieving an answer streak. So it's more like a 'catch up streak'. The people at the top of the leaderboard could also get streak points but a lot less than those at the bottom of the leaderboard. This way kids are encouraged not to guess and to try maintain their streak, kids at the bottom get an extra points boost and an opportunity to catch up with the kids at the top of the leaderboard.

padraic.woods, thanks for your reply and looking into this.

(I'm wondering if the low percent of people who turned off streak is any lower than any other options, or do 99% just go with default and not think about how points work etc)

I understand the idea to help those lower down the leaderboard with a bonus, but it seems to be a gimmick.  Helps for lower people might make games closer but if you're really trying to evaluate something a straightforward point system is best.

I'm wondering if the issue could be solved better by how the main points are awarded.  Going from 1000 to 500 points makes it so one quick guess correct is as good as 2 correct guesses at the end.  A slower degradation something like 1000 to 750 would award correct answers better compared to guessing.  Possibly also giving a few seconds before the points start decreasing from 1000 gives people a reason to think a bit longer before just quickly guessing.  1000 points is so much and seem to tick away so fast, starting at 100 and go down slower may slow the pace a bit and get people to think.

    @padraic.woods.

The Answer Streak is just unfair. Period. And it needs to be discontinued.

    Look at the following example:
Person A does the first 5 questions right and last 5 wrong.
Person B alternates between right and wrong (so also 5 right and 5 wrong).
Who wins? Currently person A wins by a landslide. Person B deserves to win more, as the last questions are probably more difficult.
Of course this is an exaggerated example, but think about the next more common example:
Person A only has the last question wrong (so 9 right and 1 wrong).
Person B only has the fifth question wrong (so 9 right and 1 wrong).
Who wins? And who probably deserves to win?
Every answer streak bonus will make sure person A wins (unfairly).

"The thinking behind the answer streak bonus was to discourage guessing in a time based game. So students would take their time ..."
Our students are young and busy with the question in front of their nose, not with the deeper inner workings of Kahoot's Answer Streak....... But as I pointed out above, this system is unfair.

I like @KeltonA's idea of slowing down the number of points lost by answering later.
    Variations on this idea:
    - The first five seconds the questions stays 1000 points, only after that you will get less points.
    - The option before you start your Kahoot to disable this loosing points for answering later mechanism. (Which I prefer more. It really does not matter to me, whether a student answers after 5 or after 10 seconds as long as he/she answers right!)

BTW: I did figure out that giving 0 points for each question in your Kahoot disables and the answer streak and the less points option for answering later. Kahoot does not give you a podium, but you can download the results and see in the spreadsheet who the student with the most correct answers was.
This is different from a couple of months a go when students got an answer streak bonus on top of their 0 points...

I understand the motivation behind the streak bonus, but also find it, like most posters here, unfair. In that respect, the "slow down" suggestions from KeltonA and MarcelPott sound like a better approach making the "quick guessing" strategy less attractive.

A bit of background: We use Kahoot quizzes at our university, asking 5-20 questions from various topics covered in a lecture, with 100 to 300 students, participating anonymously. We essentially have three goals in mind:

    1. For everybody: disrupt the flow of lectures with a fun activity
    2. For students: get a feeling of how well they've understand each topic touched in the quiz, and where to catch up, in particular w.r.t. upcoming exams (plus, the top 3 are awarded symbolic prices such as a box of tea bags)
    3. For lecturers: get a feeling of how well-understood different topics are

Typically, a handful of students dominates the top 3 from fairly early on, but participation remains very high all the way until the quiz ends. Probably, because the students care more about the insights they gain than how well they do compared to others.

Bottom line: we don't seem to need the extra motivation that streak bonuses might add, but are confronted with the unfairness the good students perceive.

40 comments on this ONE post!!!!  Kahoot??  Are you listening to your customers??  Please give us the OPTION to turn the answer streak off.  Better yet, make it the DEFAULT and see how many of your users actively go in and enable it because they love it so much.......  There will not be many

    @Padraic

First of all, thanks for listening to the users.

In my case it happens what many other people have said before: my students like much much much less Kahoot due to this feature. Actually, they hate the streak bonus thing. I understand the idea of encourage students to think twice before click. Bu I can tell you that it doesn't work with my students. They used to think a lot before clicking, when the streak bonus was off. Now they think the game is unfair (so do I) and as I said, they are not as happy as they used to be about playing Kahoot.

The solution is quite easy. Add the button and let the users to choose what we prefer in each moment. There might be situations when I will prefer to activate the streak feature and others don't... Let's us be free, please.

I'll add my voice to the chorus.  Please allow Answer Streaks to be disabled.  It is a huge demotivator.  Some of my kids have stopped playing because of it.

    Well, I've already moved Quizizz.

If you didn't try it, I recommend you to give it a try. Since these Kahoot guys pay little attention to our complains, I find a better idea to move...

    Answer streak update

Based on your feedback and on our own testing we have decided to remove the allocation of answer streak points. We will still encourage users to keep their streak but there will be no allocation of extra points for achieving a streak. Since this update will require all app users to update their app we are trying to find the best time to release the update. Given that the majority of schools are now using Kahoot! for remote teaching due to Covid-19 school closures we are reluctant to release the update at this time as it requires all players to update their app. I'll update the thread when I have a date for this update.

Padraic, thank you for working to get this changed!! I'm not sure why Kahoot can't just go back to the way it used to be in that teachers could turn on Answer Streak if they wanted but had the default set to not do answer streak. It used to be something you had to turn ON, not something you had to turn OFF. That's why I was confused about your percentages of people supposedly using Answer Streak. Who uses something they have to do extra work for? Anyway, my point, as before, is simply to make it a choice like it used to be! Why does it have to be only one or the other? Why not options? Now, if you can't make your product go back to being as good as it was before (though I don't see why you wouldn't want choice for users), then I'll definitely take the complete shutdown of Answer Streak over the current situation. But why remove features from your product instead of keeping it great with OPTIONS?

    I have this issue.
When the kids answer correctly the question is shown a score higher than 1000 pts ( with answer strike bonus).
When they end the challeng, the standing shows different (and lower) scores,  without answer strike bonus.

Anyone knows how to fix it?

I'm glad to see the ability to turn off streak points come back, but I couldn't help but notice that even though people voiced their frustration for several months, Kahoot finally mentioned it was being addressed only after someone mentioned a competitive product.  Maybe your reason for waiting so long to implement is genuine, but it just sounds like fluff because you guys don't want to assign the resources to it yet but you don't want people running to Quizizz.  Our company started using Kahoot more during shelter-in-place for training to show that material is learned and to add some fun.  Once players realized the streak points existed, and that they couldn't be turned off, it really deflated the group, and several stopped playing.  And i had never turned off the streak points before because I didn't know that was even a thing.

So, has there has been confirmation the option will come back? The last comment alludes to it already having been implemented, but I can't find the option?

Would be hugely grateful of an update. I'm invested in Kahoot as it genuinely seems like the best option, but this is killing it for participants.
