Team experience: How to play kahoot in groups
What is team experience?

When presenting a live session, you can choose to present the classic "player vs player" experience or one of our "team vs team" experience.
- Player vs Player: Classic - Each player competes for a top spot on the podium.
- Team vs Team: Shared devices - Each team huddles around one device.
- Team vs Team: Personal devices - Each team player uses their own device.
It's not possible to rejoin with the same nickname and accumulated points after leaving the game (e.g. closing the app or the tab; losing connectivity). Participants who rejoin the game, need to provide a new nickname and collect points from the beginning.
The view for business users:
Shared devices
In this experience, each team huddles around one device.
- Each team can nominate a leader to pin into your session and input answers.
- The team leader can also add a nickname for each teammate. These will be shown throughout the game.
- Team talk is enabled to give teams 5 secs to discuss questions.
Personal devices
In this experience, each team player uses their own device. You can check how many teams with how many participants you can have on the relevant pricing page:
- Business - all business plans that include team experience include custom names and lineups.
- Higher ed
- School
- Students
- Personal
- Event
☝️ The total number of members across all teams cannot exceed your subscription plan's overall participant limit. You have the flexibility to allocate any number of players to individual teams, provided you stay within this total.
For example, if your plan allows 2,000 participants, you could assign 200 players to one team and 1,800 to another.
You can also learn more about team names, line-ups, and team talk as well as scores and reports.
Team names, line-ups, and team talk
Hosts with plans offering automatic line-ups or team names cannot edit these elements. Team names are represented by different terms related to creatures and an illustration.
Participants are automatically assigned to teams. Teams are automatically rebalanced if participants drop out. Team talk is enabled by default to give teams 5 secs to discuss questions. You can find the Team talk button in the bottom right corner by clicking the Settings button if you wish to disable it (recommended for video conferences).
When the host has a plan that includes custom line-ups and team names, participants will see suggested team names. Those can be edited by both participants and the host.
- You can click the + button in the top left to add more teams or edit a team to rename or delete it. Once you've edited a team name, participants can no longer edit it.
- When participants join your kahoot, they can choose which team to join. You can also move participants to different teams by dragging a nickname from one team to another. You can also remove them from your game by using the removal button that appears when you hover your cursor over their nickname.
-
Team talk is enabled by default to give teams time to discuss questions. Time allotted ranges from 5-20 seconds, based on the question timer. You can find the Team talk button in the bottom right corner by clicking the Settings button if you wish to disable it (recommended for video conferences).
Scores and reports
During gameplay, team scores will be visible on scoreboards and the podium. These are an average of team player scores.
Player scores are not visible during gameplay. You can find them in your report afterward.

How is the team score calculated for each question? Is it the average score of each player on the team? Can teams have different number of players?
How do I stop a team mode kahoot from starting before all teams have signed in?
Hi LBryant0201!
To stop a team mode Kahoot! from starting before all teams have signed in, you can turn off the Autoplay feature. Here are the steps to do this:
You can find more about Live Game Settings here. Please let us know if you have any other questions.
hiiiii I'm new to kahoot
Hi @mya.jackson!
We're happy you chose Kahoot! To learn more about our platform - how to play, create kahoots, and host them, please see here: Get started. And if you ever need help with your account or kahoot, please contact our Support https://support.kahoot.com/hc/requests/new :)
There is no way to change the team names in team mode. There's just a trash icon next to each team name. How do you change the team names? Without this ability teams is too difficult to organize logistically because the names are consistent from game to game. This is a very poor design choice.
Hi @kimchibrian, thank you for your feedback, and I apologize for any inconvenience.
I checked your account type and saw that you should be able to change Team names in team mode.
If you encounter any issues, please contact us via https://support.kahoot.com/hc/requests/new Thank you!
In the free Kahoot account, how many teams are allowed in the Team mode? I saw it says, up to 10 participants. For some reason, it already says I have 2 participants (which I guess 1 of them is me, and the other one was a friend who tested for me in the "demonstration or visualization" mode).
May I remove this friend as a participant?
Hello priscillaribeiro!
With a free Higher Ed account, you can host a live game with up to 10 individual participants. When using a Team game mode, you are limited to 5 teams total. For example, you could have 5 teams with 2 participants on each team.
Additionally, the participant limit is only applicable to a live game and resets every time you host a new game.
If you require any further help, please reach out to us via https://support.kahoot.com/hc/requests/new Thank you!
It seems that my students cannot make their own team names anymore. Am I missing something in the settings?
Hey @Tiko1963!
If you would like your students to name their teams playing one of our Team modes, please remember to enable this option before you start hosting the game. Once you launch your kahoot to select the game mode you wish to host it in, please use the Settings icon in the bottom-right corner and scroll down to click Allow team selection toggle. This will enable players to name their teams.
