Math Missions: How to play and progress

Math Missions offers an adaptive, curriculum-aligned learning path that connects all experiences within Kahoot! Math Games. It gives children a structured way to practice math at their own pace, building confidence by bridging knowledge gaps and reinforcing core concepts without the need for endless, repetitive practice.

What is Math Missions?

Math Missions is designed as a self-driven study tool within the Kahoot! app and Kahoot! web platform for learners from Kindergarten through 5th Grade, offering a range of benefits for young learners

• It provides unlimited practice questions aligned with the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), ensuring they are perfectly tailored to your child's specific grade level.
• The game meets each child where they are by automatically drilling down to foundational skills if they struggle, or moving them forward seamlessly if they master a topic quickly.
• Children and parents can select specific topics to practice, allowing for targeted study sessions that prepare for tests or reinforce classroom learning.
• The experience is fully accessible in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese.

How to access Math Missions

Getting started is simple and intuitive:

In the Kahoot! app:

• You can access the Math Games screen by opening the Kahoot! app and tapping on Kahoot! Math Games from the experience switcher (menu) screen.
  
• For personal accounts, teachers, and older students, you can also access it directly from the Math Games banner on your Kahoot! app home screen.
  

On the Kahoot! web platform:

• The Math Games screen can be accessed from the Math Games banner in the Discover section.
  

Once you are on the Math Games home screen:

1. Tap on the Math Missions banner or the Path icon at the bottom navigation bar.
2. You will enter a quick onboarding flow that asks, "What grade are you in?" Choose from grades 1–5 or "I'm older."
   
3. After selecting a grade, students must complete a short assessment to ensure they are on the right grade level. If a mild struggle is detected, students can choose whether to continue on the chosen grade or start with an easier one. If they struggle with answering more than half of the questions correctly, they will automatically be moved to a lower grade.
   
4. Get ready to advance through challenges as your space rocket takes off! You will land directly on the learning path at the first node of the first topic for your chosen grade.
5. The number on the node you should start with will be animated to guide you. Simply tap the animated node to begin your mission!
   
6. If you have a specific learning goal later on, you can also filter and select a specific math topic to focus on.

How the Learning Path works

Math Missions is built on a skill map created by our pedagogy experts. This skill map defines progression: each practice session covers a specific skill, so the more kids practice, the more skills they master to build confidence in the topic. Students can progress through topics by completing the practice nodes and completing the final battle.

Quizzes (kahoots)

Adaptive practice sessions where children apply what they’ve learned. The length of the quiz adjusts based on how well the child is doing.

Final Battle: 

A review challenge at the end of a learning strand that tests all the skills practiced, adapting to the child's mastery level to ensure a positive, completable experience.

Rewards and Streaks

To keep kids engaged, Math Missions uses a gamified progression system that celebrates milestones and consistency:

• When children finish a topic, they see a celebratory summary showing their score (e.g., 19/23 correct), the XP earned, and any active daily or weekly streaks. From here, they can claim a reward, review and correct missed questions, or simply continue their mission.
  
• The learning path is clearly visible, so children can watch their space rocket move forward, unlocking milestones and celebrating their progress along the way.

Daily limits for free users

Math Missions is fully unlocked for users with a premium Kahoot! subscription. Free users also have access, with a few daily limits:

• Free users can complete up to 2 new practice sets (or Final Battles) per calendar day.
• Replaying a previously completed practice set is always unlimited and does not count toward the daily limit. Replays are a great way to review, but they do not advance your learning path or update the adaptive engine.
• If a free user hits their daily limit in the middle of a node (for example, completing 2 out of 3 practice sets before hitting the limit), the system simply pauses their progress. The following day, they can continue with the remaining practice set right where they left off. 
• Once the daily limit of 2 new sets is reached, attempting to start a new one will trigger an upgrade screen (which includes a parent gate).
