How to join a Kahoot! game
You can join a Kahoot! game in three ways:
- Enter a game PIN at kahoot.it or in the Kahoot! app.
- Open a direct join link shared by the host.
- Scan the QR code shared or displayed by the host.
Join with a game PIN
- Go to kahoot.it in your browser or open the Kahoot! app.
- Tap Join button and enter the game PIN provided by the host.
- Select Enter.
- If prompted, enter the player identifier requested by the host.
- Enter your nickname or use the nickname generator if it's enabled.
- Follow any additional instructions displayed on your device.
💡 A Kahoot! game PIN is generated for a specific session. Participants can't create or search for a game PIN themselves. Ask the host for the PIN if you don't have it.

Join with a link
Open the direct join link shared by the host.
- For a live game, the link takes you to the correct session without requiring you to manually enter the game PIN.
- For an assignment, the link opens the self-paced kahoot in your browser or the Kahoot! app.
☝️ A direct link lets you skip manually entering the PIN, but it doesn't bypass other joining requirements. For example, if the host has enabled 2-Step Join, you'll still need to complete the security step.

Join with a QR code
- Open your Ka device's camera and scan the QR code displayed or shared by the host.
- Tap the notification or link that appears.
- Follow the instructions on your device to join.
You can also open the Kahoot! app, select Join, and use the QR code scanner.
💡 If you're joining a live game and the QR code on the host's screen is difficult to scan, ask the host to enlarge it.
☝️ Scanning a QR code lets you skip manually entering the game PIN, but other joining requirements, including 2-Step Join, can still apply.
What happens after you join?
What happens next depends on the settings selected by the host.
You may be asked to:
- Enter a player identifier: Follow the instructions displayed on your device. Learn more about player identifier.
- Choose a nickname: You may enter your own nickname or select one generated automatically if the host enabled the nickname generator.
- Complete 2-Step Join: Match the four-tile pattern displayed on the host's screen by tapping the corresponding tiles on your device. The 2-Step Join pattern refreshes regularly. If it changes before you finish, use the new pattern displayed on the host's screen.
☝️ 2-Step Join can still be required if you joined using a direct link or QR code.
Can I join a Kahoot! after the game has started?
Yes. In supported live game experiences, you can join after the host has started the game as long as joining is still available.
Use the current game PIN, QR code, or join link and follow the normal joining steps.
The game PIN and QR code may remain visible on the host's screen while the game is in progress.
💡 If you're late, try joining with the current PIN, QR code, or link before asking the host to restart the game. You may miss questions that were completed before you joined.
What to do if you can't join or get disconnected
If you can't join a Kahoot! game:
- Check that you've entered the game PIN correctly.
- Ask the host to confirm that you're using the current game PIN.
- Make sure the session is still active.
- If you're using a link or QR code, try opening kahoot.it and entering the current PIN manually.
Game PINs are temporary and belong to specific sessions. If the host's session has been interrupted or restarted, a previous PIN may no longer work.
If you get disconnected
Return to the game using your browser or the Kahoot! app.
- If a rejoin option appears, follow the instructions on your device to reconnect and resume as your previous player.
- If a rejoin option isn't available, you may need to enter the session again.
☝️ Avoid creating a new player entry if you're offered the option to resume your existing session.

Yes you can definitely have different players join/complete the same Kahoot at different times.
You just have to assign you kahoot instead of hosting it live. (Notice if you host a live kahoot, the ones joining the assigned kahoot will not be joining the kahoot you hosted live!).
