How to randomize questions for Kahoot! games

  • I would really like the questions to be randomized in assigned Kahoots!  Students open two browser windows, two different games, and then will get the answers wrong in one window, one question ahead, and then use the other window for all the right answers.  I explain that they will not learn as much gaming the system, but they are 7th graders and have trouble seeing the big picture sometimes

  • Thank you for your feedback @Miss_Arents! At the moment it's not possible to randomize questions in assigned kahoots. However, you can enable the randomized order of answers in the assignment settings after clicking Assign.

  • Would be helpful to enable/disable randomizing questions before launching/hosting.

  • Hi Leadership.Academy!

You can turn question randomization on or off in the lobby before you start hosting. Once you set it, that preference will be remembered for your future games, so you don’t need to change it every time. You can also adjust the randomization setting while hosting if you change your mind mid-game.

Is there a specific scenario or reason you had in mind for needing this option that we might not be covering yet?

  • I do not often host games live for a number of reasons.  It would be VERY helpful to be able to randomize QUESTION order for assigned Kahoots.  Is there a work-around (besides hosting live) to get the question order randomized?

  • I agree! It would be VERY helpful to be able to randomize QUESTION order for assigned Kahoots. Also, that students get certain amount of random questions from a question bank, so they don't get exactly the same set of questions as their classmates.

  • Thank you for your feedback!

We understand how beneficial randomizing question order would be for assigned kahoots, especially for reducing the risk of students sharing answer sequences in asynchronous settings.

Currently, the “Randomize order of questions” feature is not available for assigned kahoots. Because questions appear in a fixed order for every participant, shuffling them presents technical challenges for the scoreboard, which typically appears between questions to track progress across the group. Since students in an assignment may start at different times, a randomized order would make it difficult to display a consistent, real-time scoreboard.

Additionally, kahoots that include content slides cannot be randomized to ensure those slides remain in the correct sequence relative to the questions.

Your suggestion about allowing students to receive a random selection of questions from a larger question bank is an interesting idea. I have included this specific point in the feedback passed along to our development team.

While there isn't a direct workaround for assignments right now beyond hosting live, we have shared your specific feedback with our product team.

We appreciate your patience and your help in making Kahoot! better for asynchronous learning!
