A Kahoot! story allows educators, corporate trainers, and team leads to deliver interactive microlearning and multimedia presentations directly to their audience. This guide covers how to generate stories with AI, build custom layouts from scratch, configure interactive blocks, and manage team permissions.
In this article you'll learn:
What is a Kahoot! story?
A Kahoot! story is an interactive, slide-free content format designed for asynchronous microlearning, self-paced training modules, and engaging company updates. Combining text, rich media, knowledge checks, and interactive polls, stories keep learners focused on one bite-sized piece of information at a time.
Creating a Kahoot! story requires a plan that includes story authoring. Specific interactive blocks – such as custom themes, audio uploads, PDF conversion, active text links, and AI tools – depend on your active subscription tier.
How do I generate a Kahoot! story with AI?
The AI-powered story creator creates a ready-to-edit draft from a text prompt or an uploaded document within seconds.
Steps to Generate with AI:
- Log in to your Kahoot! account.
- Click Create in the upper-right navigation menu and select Story.
- In the Create story dialog, select a preset format:
- News
- Training
- Survey
- Task
- Other
- Enter your topic prompt (up to 120 characters) in the text field, or pick a suggested topic suggestion.
- Click the Shuffle icon to see additional topic prompts.
- (Optional) Click Upload file under Source document to attach a reference PDF.
- Click Create story.
- In the preview window, adjust your Format, Language, or Tone of voice, then click Create New if you want another version.
- Click Save to load the draft into the full editor.
AI Technical Limits & Privacy Guidelines:
- Topic prompt: A written topic is mandatory; an uploaded PDF supplements the prompt but cannot replace it.
- PDF constraints: Maximum size of 200 MB containing selectable text. The AI processes up to the first 40,000 characters.
- Data Privacy: Prompts and source documents are processed securely via OpenAI servers located in Europe. Do not include sensitive personal identifiable information (PII) or confidential corporate secrets.
- Admin Toggles: AI tools can be managed by team administrators or disabled individually under Settings › Access to AI.
How do I create a Kahoot! story from scratch?
- Click Create in the upper-right corner and select Story.
- If prompted by the generator window, click Start from scratch. (If your account tier excludes AI features, you will enter the blank creator canvas automatically.)
- Choose an initial block from the canvas to start.
- Click the Plus (+) icon on the left panel to insert additional content blocks.
- Reorder blocks: Click any block and grab the drag-handle on its side, or drag block types directly from the left sidebar and release them where desired.
What blocks can I add to a Kahoot! story?
1. Text Block
Use text blocks for narratives, structured reading, and bulleted takeaways.
-
Rich Formatting: Highlight any text to toggle header levels (H1, H2, H3, Body), bulleted lists, numbered lists, alignment, bold, italic, and underline styling.
-
Inline Elements: Click the + icon beside the text block to insert block quotes or emojis.
-
Hyperlinks: Highlight text and select the link icon, or paste a standard web URL.
Note: Clickable links require a supported Kahoot! 360 subscription tiers; other plans display URLs as plain text. -
AI Text Enhancer: For blocks containing at least 10 words, click the Magic Wand icon
beside the block to change tone, adjust length, or translate language. To apply AI enhancement across all text in the story simultaneously, select the Magic Wand icon below the left-side block menu.
2. Image Block
- Click Add image to select royalty-free media from the integrated Getty Images library or choose Upload media to use your own files.
- Supported Formats: JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP up to 50 MB.
- Galleries: A single Image block can hold up to 10 images. Click the + icon next to the block to add images and arrange their display order.
-
Block Controls: Click the three vertical dots (⋮) in the top-right corner of the block to:
- Add media details: Provide alternative text (Alt text) and source attribution credits.
- Crop image: Adjust image framing.
- Delete image: Remove the currently visible slide.
- Delete gallery: Remove the block and all containing media.
3. Video Block
Click Add video inside the block to load the video manager:
-
YouTube: Enter a keyword or paste a public video URL. (Note: YouTube embedding is not supported for business workspaces or adult personal accounts. Business creators should utilize direct upload or Vimeo.)
-
Vimeo: Select Vimeo on the left menu, paste your video link, and click Add Vimeo video.
- Upload Video: Click Upload video on the left panel. Supported file types include MP4, MPEG, OGG, WEBM, AVI, MOV, and H.264 up to 200 MB. Remain in the editor until video encoding completes; navigating away prematurely cancels the upload.
-
Adjust Video Playtime: Click the three vertical dots (⋮) on the video block, select Video start/end time, define custom timestamps, and click Save.
4. Audio Block
Click Add in the Audio block to configure one of three formats:
-
Read Aloud: Enter up to 120 characters. The system automatically detects the spoken language, which can be modified manually via the drop-down selector.
-
Record Audio: Select Record from the left panel, click the red record button, speak into your microphone, and press Stop recording. Ensure your web browser permissions grant microphone access to avoid audio recording errors.
-
Upload Audio: Upload pre-recorded audio files up to 50 MB in MP3 or WAV format.
- Audio Controls: Click the three dots (⋮) to access Edit or Delete audio. To replace an uploaded audio track, delete the block and insert a new one.
5. Embed Block
Consolidate learning tracks by embedding native Kahoot! resources:
- Paste a link to any public or workspace kahoot, story, or course, or click Browse content to select from your personal library.
- Constraints: Non-Kahoot! external URLs will trigger an "Embed link not valid" message. Private items will prompt you to update visibility settings before embedding.
6. Poll Block
Collect real-time learner sentiment and feedback:
- Classic: Custom or pre-set multiple-choice questions with up to 4 response fields.
- Scale: Configurable spectrum ratings with customized numeric ranges and low/high endpoint labels.
- NPS® Scale: Standardized Net Promoter Score assessment rated on a fixed 0–10 spectrum.
7. Checklist Block
Structure actionable next steps and accountability checklists:
- Add up to 10 list items per block.
- Assignment Requirement Rule: Checklist items remain optional by default. To enforce mandatory completion, assign your story and enable Mark checklist items as done to complete assignment.
8. PDF Conversion Block
Quickly convert legacy instructional documents into native interactive blocks:
- Open the left sidebar and click Upload and convert PDF file.
- Select a file up to 10 MB.
- The platform will automatically parse document content into corresponding text and image blocks, appending them directly to your existing story layout.
How do I customize theme styling and workspace settings?
Visual Themes
Select the Color palette icon in the upper-right corner to toggle between light and dark backgrounds (e.g., Dark burgundy). Themes require supported plans and cannot be modified when editing a story directly from within a parent course bundle.
Story Settings
Click the Gearwheel icon in the top toolbar:
- Basic Information: Update story title, write a meta description, assign folder directories, and specify age ranges or target grades (for educators).
- Cover Image: Set the thumbnail preview displayed in libraries and learner feeds.
- Visibility Settings: Choose access levels (Private, Organization, or Public) based on workspace rights.
Saving, Editing Locks, and Workflow Troubleshooting
- Autosave vs. Drafts: Changes persist automatically indicated by Saving… and Autosaved status indicators. Stories remain in an unpublished draft status until you click Save.
- Inactive Save Button: If the Save button is greyed out, verify that your story includes a title in Settings and contains at least one completed content block. Hovering your mouse over the button reveals what is missing.
- Preview Mode: Click the Eye icon in the upper-right header to test formatting and media responsiveness before publishing.
- Concurrent Editing Conflicts: Stories support single-editor sessions only. If the story is open in another tab or currently edited by a workspace collaborator, the system displays an "Editing in another window" warning. Close redundant sessions to restore editor access.
- Finding Saved Stories: All finalized stories and drafts are accessible in the dedicated Stories tab within your account Library.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
-
What is a Kahoot! story and who can create one? A Kahoot! story is an interactive presentation and microlearning format consisting of modular media, text, knowledge checks, and interactive polls. Creating stories requires a compatible subscription tier across Kahoot! 360, Business, Higher Education, or K-12 educator accounts.
-
Why is the "Save" button greyed out in the story creator? The Save button remains disabled until your story has both a valid title and at least one content block placed on the canvas. Hover over the button to view missing criteria.
-
Can two collaborators edit a Kahoot! story at the same time? No. Kahoot! does not support concurrent real-time co-authoring. If an active session is detected elsewhere, the canvas locks with the warning "This story is currently being edited by someone else."
-
Why are YouTube videos not working in my business story? Due to commercial licensing and platform restrictions, YouTube embeds are disabled for business accounts and adult personal profiles. Business users should upload native video files (up to 200 MB) or embed public Vimeo URLs.
- How do I require learners to complete every item on a story checklist? To make checklist completion mandatory, distribute the story as an assigned challenge (or include it inside a structured course) and activate the toggle Mark checklist items as done to complete assignment.
