Kahoot! courses: Intro

Kahoot! online courses help you deliver bite-sized, structured learning on any topic, anywhere, anytime. Instead of assigning each kahoot individually, you can group several activities into a single course and easily track learner progress.

What is a Kahoot! course?

A Kahoot! course strings several activities together into one continuous learning experience. It's ideal for employee training, extended lesson plans or comprehensive review sessions.

A course can hold kahoots and videos. Depending on your plan, you can also add stories and PDF documents.

You can run a course in three ways:

• Host live: show it on a big screen and play it together.
• Assign: send it to participants to complete at their own pace, by a deadline you set.
• Learn: study it on your own, and pause and resume at any time.

Each time you host, assign or study a course, you create a course session. You'll find your sessions on the course page under Recent sessions.

Which plans include courses?

You can create courses, host them live and study them on your own on almost every Kahoot! plan, including the free plan.

These features are included in selected paid plans:

• assigning a course to participants
• course reports
• inviting participants by email or by group
• course certificates and releasing modules on a schedule (selected higher plans)

If your plan doesn't include a feature, you'll see an upgrade option when you click Assign or View results.

Who can participate in a Kahoot! course?

Anyone with the course link can join, with or without a Kahoot! account. Learners without an account can continue as a guest and enter a nickname.

There are two exceptions:

• Login required: the host can require learners to log in with their organization's account. Guests can't join these sessions.
• Full sessions: each session has a participant limit that depends on the host's plan. When the limit is reached, new learners see "This course session is full".

How do learners join an assigned course?

After you click Create assignment, choose how to share the course:

• By email: learners receive an invitation with a link to the course.
• Groups: send it to a group in your organization.
• With URL or QR code: share the link or QR code yourself, for example in a message or on a slide.

Email and group invitations are included in selected plans. The link or QR code is always available.

Learners then:

1. Open the course, either from the link in the invitation email or from the link or QR code you shared.
2. Log in, or continue as a guest and enter a nickname. If you turned on Login required, they must log in with their organization's account.
3. Click Start to begin the first activity. When they come back, the button says Continue.
4. Complete the activities in order. If you turn off Play in sequence, they can choose their own order.

Depending on your settings, learners may also receive:

• an email when a new module opens, if you release modules on a schedule
• reminder emails, if you turned on Automated reminders or clicked Send a reminder
• a completion email when they finish the whole course, if Course completion emails is on

How to check a course's progress

You can track your learners' progress for each session in two places:

• Reports > Courses > Hosted by you, then open the session.
• Courses in your library > open the course > Recent sessions. Open the session's menu and choose View results.

How to end a session early or change its dates

If you hosted the session, you can end it or change its dates in either of two places:

• In the session's report: click End now to end it, or Change to adjust the start or end date. If the session hasn't started yet, you can also click Start now.
• On the course page: under Recent sessions, open the session's menu and choose End now or Edit time settings. The organization's owner can do this too.

A few rules apply:

• You can change the start date only before the session begins.
• The end date can be up to 31 days after the start. On plans for 2,000 participants or more, it can be up to 186 days.
• A session that has ended can't be reopened.
• Live sessions can't be ended early or rescheduled this way.

FAQ

1. What is the difference between a course and a course session? A course is the set of activities you put together. A course session is one run of that course: a live game, an assignment to a group of learners, or your own self-study.
    
2. Is there a limit to how many kahoots I can add to a course? Yes. Depending on your plan, a course can hold up to 10 or up to 100 kahoots. Some plans also let you add a number of PDF documents on top of that. Stories and videos count toward the same limit. When you reach it, you'll see "Maximum number of content reached". To add more, upgrade your plan or split the content into two courses.
    

3. Can I add private kahoots to a course? Yes, but their visibility may change to match the course:

   • Personal space: in a Public course, private kahoots become public. In an Unlisted course, they become unlisted.
   • Shared workspace: in an Organization course, private kahoots become visible to your organization. In an Unlisted course, they become unlisted.

   When you pick kahoots, a warning at the bottom of the Select a kahoot window tells you when this will happen. To avoid it, change the course's visibility in Course settings > Visibility before you add the kahoots. Changing the course to Private later doesn't change the kahoots back.If you create the course in a shared workspace, private kahoots you created are moved from your personal space to the shared workspace. They are not copied.
    

4. Can I add more kahoots to an existing course? Yes. However, the change applies only to sessions you create after you save it. Sessions that are already running, or already scheduled, keep the version they started with. To include the new kahoots, create a new session.
    
5. Can I duplicate a Kahoot! course? There is currently no button to duplicate a course. To make your own version, create a new course and add the kahoots you want. When you host, assign or study a course that someone else created, a shortcut to it is added to your library. The shortcut always shows the latest version of the original course and can't be edited.
    
6. How do I leave or delete a course I accidentally joined or started? 
   • If you joined as a learner: go to Reports > Joined by you, open the menu next to the course and choose Move to trash. This removes it from your own list. You'll still appear in the host's report, and hosts can't currently remove a participant from a course session.
   • If you started a session as a host: open the course, find the session under Recent sessions, and choose Delete session from its menu. Only the host or the organization's owner can do this.
   • To delete the course itself: choose Move to trash from the course menu. Sessions and reports you already created aren't deleted with it.
      
7. Why didn't I get an email for the next part of the course? Kahoot! doesn't send an email after each activity. Open the same course link again to continue. If the host releases modules on a schedule, the next module opens on its release date. Until then you'll see when to come back.
