How do I save a kahoot
To save your kahoot as a playable version, you must ensure all necessary elements are completed.
- Open your kahoot in the creator. If you haven't started yet, learn how to create a kahoot to begin.
- Add or mark the correct answers in all questions from the Test knowledge category. Each question must have at least one correct option selected.
- Add a title so players can easily find and recognize your kahoot.
- When you are ready, click Save in the top-right corner of the creator.
Why is my kahoot saved as a draft?
If you start creating a game and close the creator without saving, or explicitly choose the Keep as a draft or Save to drafts option, your game will be saved as a draft.
A kahoot will only save as a draft if:
- Your game is missing necessary elements (e.g., missing a title or a correct answer isn't marked).
- You used a feature marked with a turquoise star, which is a premium feature not included in your current subscription plan.
How do I save a draft as a playable kahoot?
You must save your game as a complete version to host it. To convert a draft into a playable game:
- Go to your Library and navigate to the Drafts tab.
- Find your draft, click the three vertical dots (⋮), then click the Edit button under the game's title. (Depending on your screen size or browser zoom level, this might appear as a pencil icon).
- Click the Save button in the top right corner of the kahoot creator.
You will see a pop-up message that will either:
- Inform you about the missing elements of your kahoot. You can click the Fix button to address them.
- Offer an upgrade to a higher-tier plan if you used premium features. You can either remove the premium features (marked with a star) or upgrade your account to save your kahoot as a complete version.
Once the issues are fixed, click Save again. If no additional pop-up message appears, your game is saved as a complete version. Once completed, you can easily adjust who can view it by modifying your kahoot summary settings.
What is the difference between an unsaved and a draft kahoot?
It is important to understand the difference between these labels so you can locate your work in progress.
-
Draft label: Used when no playable kahoot exists yet. This object appears under the Drafts tab in your Library.
-
Unsaved label: Used when a playable kahoot already exists, but you have made recent edits that haven't been published. This object appears under Recent and within its specific folder in your Library.
Troubleshooting: Why can't I save my kahoot?
If you are receiving errors or are unable to save, check the following:
-
Premium Themes: Check the Themes section of the creator. If a theme has a turquoise star, it requires an upgrade. We recommend removing the currently selected theme and checking if the game can be saved.
- Premium questions: Look for questions in your list with a turquoise star icon. When you open the question, a banner above the text field will indicate which premium feature is enabled.
- Missing Edit button: If you cannot find the edit button in your draft library on the web platform, check your browser zoom level or screen size, as it may be minimized to a pencil icon.
If you want to have a printed version of kahoot, you can save it as PDF. Watch the video below to learn more!

I have the free version of Kahoot. The problem is that I cannot change my from a draft version to a complete version. In following Kahoot's help directions, I went to my library's draft section, but there is no EDIT button under the title. What can I do so that I can save it as a complete version? I need it by 7:30 am
Hi @mgfoeller_OHHS,
Very sorry to be responding back 15 hours later, as I see your question was time-sensitive. This article about saving kahoots is focused on guiding you through our web platform. If you're using our iOS or Android mobile app, please check this article out.
If you are using our web platform, the "edit" button should be off to the lower-right corner of the kahoot.
Depending on your screen size or browser zoom level, it might instead be a pencil.
You can find this edit/pencil button no matter if you're on a free or paid version of Kahoot!. But if you are still unable to find it, please take a screenshot and contact us.
Warm regards,
Bryan
Mine only save as a draft. When I click the edit button, and then click save it saves as a draft. How can I save as a completed kahoot?
Hi kklatt57!
It sounds like you have a feature enabled that isn't included at your current plan level.
Check to make sure you're not using a premium theme. The image below shows a turquoise star icon next to the word "professional" to indicate that the themes in that section require an upgrade. Meanwhile, the "free" section has no star icon and I can use any of those themes.
Check to make sure that your questions don't have premium features enabled. Look for questions with a turquoise star icon. When you open the question, you should see a banner above the question text field letting you know what premium feature is enabled. You can either upgrade to a higher-tier plan or disable that feature.
If you're still unable to find what's preventing you from saving, you can contact us and we'll do our best to help troubleshoot.
Warm regards,
Bryan
Our Kahoots can't be played, and the save isn't working. We keep getting errors when we hit the save button and try to play. Even our older kahoots which worked fine before.
I have lost an hour's worth of work what is happening ?
Hi! I have a premium account. I created a Kahoot with quiz and slides but can't save it, keep getting such a message:
Hi A_P4LK4.
It sounds like a technical issue.
As stated in the pop up message you show, you should contact support: https://support.kahoot.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Just lost about an hour of planning. I cannot figure out how to get the star items changed so this is free. Very very disappointed. With the limited time for planning that teacher's have, this site should be a bit clearer.
Hello Istritesky
Thank you for posting.
The stars indicate that a feature is not included in the current subscription.
The only way to remove a star is to upgrade to a subscription where this feature is included.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused by this.
