How to save a kahoot: learn how to save your game and start the Kahoot!'ing adventure. Check out our guide. There are a couple of things that are important to remember after you finish creating or editing your game.
How to save a kahoot
Wondering how to save a kahoot? Click the Save button in the top right corner of the kahoot creator. Make sure to:
- Add or mark the correct answers in the questions from the Test knowledge category.
- Add the title.
- Be mindful of using the features marked with a star . Those features are not included in your current plan. If you use them, you will have to upgrade to save your kahoot as a playable version. If you do not want to upgrade at this point, don't use the features marked with a star.
As you edit your kahoot, the creator will auto-save your changes. If for any reason, you exit the creator (e.g.: the browser closes or the computer crashes), changes should automatically save as a draft. Saving is indicated next to your kahoot’s title, in the top navigation bar.
How to save a kahoot: Drafts
Are you wondering why you can't share, assign, or host your game? It may be because it's saved as a draft.
What does it mean that my kahoot was saved as a draft?
💡 If you close the kahoot creator without saving or choose the Save as draft or Save to drafts option, your game will be saved as a draft.
💡 You'll see the option to save or keep your kahoot as a draft if:
📎 your game is missing some necessary elements (for example you did not add the title or the correct answer is not marked in a question from the Test knowledge category),
📎 you used a feature marked with a star - not included in your current plan.
💡 If your game is saved as a draft, it cannot be played, assigned, or shared.
How to save a kahoot as a playable and shareable version
💡 You need to save your game as a complete version to be able to share, assign, and host it.
- Go to your Library.
- Go to the Drafts tab.
- Click the Edit button under the game's title.
-
Click the Save button in the top right corner of the kahoot creator.
-
You'll see a popup message either:
➡️ informing you about the missing elements of your kahoot that can be added by clicking the Fix button or
➡️ offering an upgrade to a higher-tier plan that includes the premium features used in your game. Any feature in the kahoot creator marked with a star isn’t included in your current plan.
In this case, you can either remove the premium features or upgrade to save your kahoot as a complete version. - Click the Save button in the top right corner. If no additional popup message shows, your game will be saved as a complete version.
🎨 Check the Themes section of the kahoot creator. If you have any issues with saving the game, we can recommend removing the currently selected theme and checking if the game can be saved then.
Done! You've just learned how to save a kahoot.

I have the free version of Kahoot. The problem is that I cannot change my from a draft version to a complete version. In following Kahoot's help directions, I went to my library's draft section, but there is no EDIT button under the title. What can I do so that I can save it as a complete version? I need it by 7:30 am
Hi @mgfoeller_OHHS,
Very sorry to be responding back 15 hours later, as I see your question was time-sensitive. This article about saving kahoots is focused on guiding you through our web platform. If you're using our iOS or Android mobile app, please check this article out.
If you are using our web platform, the "edit" button should be off to the lower-right corner of the kahoot.
Depending on your screen size or browser zoom level, it might instead be a pencil.
You can find this edit/pencil button no matter if you're on a free or paid version of Kahoot!. But if you are still unable to find it, please take a screenshot and contact us.
Warm regards,
Bryan
Mine only save as a draft. When I click the edit button, and then click save it saves as a draft. How can I save as a completed kahoot?
Hi kklatt57!
It sounds like you have a feature enabled that isn't included at your current plan level.
Check to make sure you're not using a premium theme. The image below shows a turquoise star icon next to the word "professional" to indicate that the themes in that section require an upgrade. Meanwhile, the "free" section has no star icon and I can use any of those themes.
Check to make sure that your questions don't have premium features enabled. Look for questions with a turquoise star icon. When you open the question, you should see a banner above the question text field letting you know what premium feature is enabled. You can either upgrade to a higher-tier plan or disable that feature.
If you're still unable to find what's preventing you from saving, you can contact us and we'll do our best to help troubleshoot.
Warm regards,
Bryan
Our Kahoots can't be played, and the save isn't working. We keep getting errors when we hit the save button and try to play. Even our older kahoots which worked fine before.
I have lost an hour's worth of work what is happening ?
Hi! I have a premium account. I created a Kahoot with quiz and slides but can't save it, keep getting such a message:
Hi A_P4LK4.
It sounds like a technical issue.
As stated in the pop up message you show, you should contact support: https://support.kahoot.com/hc/en-us/requests/new
Just lost about an hour of planning. I cannot figure out how to get the star items changed so this is free. Very very disappointed. With the limited time for planning that teacher's have, this site should be a bit clearer.
Hello Istritesky
Thank you for posting.
The stars indicate that a feature is not included in the current subscription.
The only way to remove a star is to upgrade to a subscription where this feature is included.
I'm sorry for the inconvenience caused by this.
