How do I access the kahoot creator?

To begin building your game, you must first access the creator tool from your account dashboard.

  1. Log in to your Kahoot! account.
  2. Click Create in the top navigation bar.|
  3. Select Kahoot from the dropdown menu.
  4. Use the left-hand sidebar to navigate, add, or manage your questions.

You can write new questions manually, or save time using these creation methods:

How do I add questions to a kahoot?

You can add up to 200 questions per kahoot. Follow these steps to build your quiz:

  1. Click Add question from the left-side panel.
  2. Choose your preferred question type (e.g., quiz, true/false, poll).
  3. Enter the question text and the answer options.
  4. Mark the correct answer(s) where applicable.
  5. Add media like images, GIFs, or video to boost engagement.

☝️ Watch out for ⚠️ exclamation marks next to your questions. These indicate missing elements (like a missing correct answer) or that you have exceeded the character limits.

Question Guidelines and Limits:

  • Question length: Maximum 120 characters.
  • Answer length: Maximum 75 characters (or you can use an image).
  • Answer options: You must provide at least 2 options, and can provide a maximum of 6 depending on the question type. For example, Polls are limited to 6 options max.

How can I manage and organize my questions?

Organizing your kahoot is simple using the left-side panel:

  • Reorder: Click and drag a question to move it up or down the list.
  • Duplicate: Click the duplication make a kahoot icon to copy a question.
  • Delete: Click the trash make a kahoot icon to remove a question.

Troubleshooting: Why can't I save or play my kahoot?

If you are having trouble saving your game, it is usually related to premium features.

Issue: Your game is stuck in "My Drafts" and asks you to upgrade when you try to save. 
Solution: Features marked with a star (⭐) require a paid subscription.

 To save your game as a playable kahoot, you must either remove all starred features from your questions or upgrade your plan.

FAQ

  1. What is the character limit for Kahoot! questions and answers? Quiz questions can be up to 120 characters long. Quiz answers can be up to 75 characters long, or you can use an image instead of text.
     
  2. How many answer options can I add to a question? It depends on your subscription, but a minimum of 2 answers are required, and at least one must be marked correct. You can have a maximum of 6 answer options (available with certain plans) for standard questions and polls.
     
  3. Can I remove the media placeholder if I only want text? No, the standard "Find and insert media" box cannot be removed as it is a core default feature designed to make learning engaging. If you do not add an image, the space will remain empty.
     
  4. Can players see the questions on their own devices? Yes. When hosting a live game, click the settings icon in the bottom right corner and toggle on "Show questions & answers" on players' devices.
     
  5. Can I make a kahoot for free? Yes, anyone can create kahoots. However, some advanced question types and features (marked with a star) require a paid plan.

  • Am I able to change the name of the answers? Instead of using True or False, can I use Yes or No?

  • You can not change the wording in "True or False" module, however you can just use the first two answer options in the "Quiz module" and name them Yes or No. The live Kahoot will only show these.

  • Hi there, is there a way to remove the "Find and insert media" option in the middle of the quiz slides, if we just want to use a text-based question and make it fill up the space at the top half of the slide?  I noticed that if I don't add an image, that area is still empty, making for a bit of an awkward slide where the question is at the very top and the answers at at the very bottom with an empty space in between.  Thanks so much!

  • No, it's a standard default feature of Kahoot!.
    It's what makes Kahoot engaging and fun, and makes the learning stick better.
    What's the context for your Kahoot! use-case? Why don't you want to show any media to the participants?

  • Thank you so much for the quick reply!  We are creating a Kahoot quiz game for a student-led class activity to review some of the lecture content.  There isn't any specific media we'd need to include based on the questions so I was wondering if we can remove the media section.  If not, that's totally fine, I'll think of something to put there!

  • A workaround could be just to type: "Question" in the top bar, and then upload your own media file with text (this can be done in PowerPoint and exported to JPG), as shown here.

When you host your live game, you can edit the settings by clicking the settings icon in the down-right corner and from here you can choose to "show questions & answers" on players devices

  • Is there any way to increase the number of answer options past 6? I have a poll but I need 10 answer options.

    Currently, our Poll feature only offers up to 6 answer options.

    A way to come around this might be to use the new Scale feature (if available in your licenses). You can add your poll options in a Slide and then convert that slide to an image you add to the Kahoot. The participants can choose on the Scale, which option they prefer the most (See image example). 
    This can only be done if it's not a multiple-choice poll.

    There are no limits on how many live games you can host – you will be able to host the same kahoot more than once.
